The League of Dreams

The League of Dreams is an adaptive sports league for athletes with physical and developmental disabilities, and their mission is to give every child the chance to play by providing sports training, team camaraderie, and competitive sporting opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

The mission of the League of Dreams is to work towards fulfillment of their motto: “Every child should have the chance to play!” Therefore, their mission is to provide sports training, team camaraderie, and competitive sporting opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

What started as a dream quickly became reality when, in March 2007, the League of Dreams began its inaugural year with baseball and less than 50 kids participated. The league added basketball in the fall of 2007, to keep activities going, then was nominated and received the Beautiful Bakersfield Award for All American City Tradition, Civic/Non-Profit. In 2012, with the help of county supervisor Mike Maggard and many other donors and community members, the League of Dreams opened Abilities Field, the very first adaptive baseball field in Bakersfield at Fruitvale Norris Park. In 2013, League of Dreams, with the help of a grant from the Adaptive Arthritis Association, assisted with building the accessible playground in front of the baseball field.

The 2012 League of Dreams Baseball season had over 165 registered players due to the fundraising efforts of former Chicago White Sox third baseman, Brent Morel, a Bakersfield native. It was announced at the 1st Annual Gala and Auction event that the program would be free for all athletes with disabilities because of these fundraising efforts.

In 2013, the league added Bowling season as a summer sport. In 2017, The League began partnering with Kern Dance Alliance to add a dance program.

To date, the League of Dreams has served over 500 athletes with disabilities in Kern County.

The League of Dreams continues to fundraise enabling programs to provide a low cost for all their athletes. They also offer scholarships for those with financial hardships.

The TERRIO Therapy Spring Classic

The TERRIO Therapy Spring Classic has become the pre-season tradition for all the participating schools and their loyal fans. The tournament committee looks forward to providing a quality baseball experience each year for the players and coaches.

The tournament is actually two-in-one with 25 Varsity teams and 25 JV teams competing in two divisions. It provides an opportunity for over 800 boys to play in a tournament to develop their skills and have some exposure to professional baseball scouts.

The Larry Carr Memorial Golf Tournament

This legendary event was named for Larry Carr who was the president of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital for 34 years. When Mr. Carr passed away in 2002, the annual hospital golf tournament was named for him because of his love for the hospital and his passion for golf. The tournament has evolved into a two-day event. An elegant dinner and auction are held the night before a great day of golf.

The event benefits programs and services for the S. A. Camp Companies Burn Unit at the Grossman Burn Center and the Lauren Small Children’s Center at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, which encompasses:

31-bed neonatal intensive care unit
8-bed pediatric intensive care unit (the only one in the southern San Joaquin Valley
35-bed general pediatrics
The Robert A. Grimm Children’s Pavilion for Emergency Services, which opened in spring 2017
TERRIO is the tournament sponsor for this event and continues to support Dignity Health Memorial Hospital throughout the year, providing inpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy services, while also providing outpatient pediatric therapy services.
